Brushed Powdered Charcoal
The traditional presentation of the silhouette as a clean-cut sharply defined profile is softened and blurred in this work. Rather than as a fixed frozen likeness, the fluid medium of water and powdered charcoal is employed to present the subject as a mercurial shifting series of moments, glimpses and movements.
Finalist in the 2020 Adam Portraiture Award
“Superb control of medium to establish the essential characteristics of a lost profile. It is clear that it has taken a lifetime of observation and training to achieve this impression of a summary execution. From a distance this resolves into a silhouette but at close range the detail of the features is exceptionally refined”.
